Our monthly show will highlight our upcoming North Georgia Folk Festival happening on October 6 at Sandy Creek Park north of Athens. And, this month’s Hoot will be located on the Pavilion, which is in the center of the Foundry Park/ Melting Point parking lot. We love the pavilion with it’s party lights and big ceiling fans! AND the Hoyt House will be serving up a special menu of delicious food!

This month our regular music variety show, The Hoot, will be borrowing talent from the upcoming downtown Athens festival, Athfest happening June 20-24.  In addition to music, we’ll have information about the festival, free yard signs, compilation CD’s and Athfest wristbands for sale there.  This year our show features bands who have songs on this years Athfest CD.  Clay Leverett & The Buzzards, singing country tinged songs with pedal steel and acoustic guitars. Also, 40th Street Candid Coal People the one-man-band has picked up a piano & banjo player to join him doing orignial folk.  And Americana singer/songwriter, Dodd Ferrelle will lay out some new tunes from his just released CD.  Tommy Jordan guest hosts the evening and opens the show.  For more information, athensfolk.org or athfest.com

We are back on the Melting Point Pavilion for the April installment of our monthly show!  The Pavilion is located in the center of the Foundry Park Inn complex where the Melting Point is located.  We LOVE the pavilion as we’re outside, under cover, in an intimate and festive atmosphere.  Hoyt House provides us with a special menu for our show.  Don’t miss your chance to come listen to music under the Pavilion and eat some good food there!  This month we have a fantastic line up featuring The Skipperdees, twin sisters who play banjo, guitar, trumpet and sing great harmony’s.  Also from Canton, GA, Vacant House, a full out rockabilly, old country band!  AND we have the Vinyl Strangers doing pop tune originals with harmony’s A’ La Beatles!!  Susan Staley opens and hosts.  Visit athensfolk.org for more info OR the Athens Folk Society’s Facebook page!

This month the Folk Society’s music variety show continues as we welcome Between Naybors, which features Greg Benson, Melanie Morgan,  and Dale Wechsler.  They’ll be doing a set of folky originals ( www.reverbnation.com/betweennaybors).  Also, returning to the Hoot is MrJordanMrTonks, which is Tommy & William doing acoustic versions of rock songs and more on Dobro & Guitar & Harmony Vocals.  And Rachel Lynn, singer, songwriter doing folk with a touch of roots rock. This month we welcome the blues, rock, Americana band, Driftwood, which includes a veteran cast of Athens musicians (driftwoodband.net).  We also welcome J.D. Smith a indie/pop singer songwriter who recently finished her CD Conscious Earth with John Kean,  a recording that benefits battered women (myspace.com/jdsmithmusic). And we also will have a set from farmer Todd Lister & Friends doing folk favorites, and maybe even some originals!  And joining Todd will be a whole cast of characters….  Susan Staley opens and hosts the evening.  athensfolk.org

Folk Festival Preview Hoot:
Monday Sept 12, 2011

This month’s Hoot will be located on the Pavilion, which is in the center of the Foundry Park/ Melting Point parking lot. Our show will highlight our upcoming North Georgia Folk Festival happening on Sept 24 at Sandy Creek Park north of Athens. This month we’ll welcome back Bill Ashley and The Kitchen Pickers who are pictured on this year’s poster, drawn by Art Rosenbaum. They will also be performing at this year’s Festival, but we’ll get a preview of great standard bluegrass music from Bill and his band. Also, we will welcome for the first time The Triskelion, a new traditional Celtic/Old Time band which features concertina, hammered dulcimer, fiddle and much much more! AND we will also have Beverly Smith & Friends doing a set…Beverly travels all over the US & UK giving concerts and music workshops. She is playing the festival with Bluegrass Legend Alice Gerrard, but for the Hoot, she will likely have Art Rosenbaum and other notible musicians joining her for a set of early country & old time music. Festival Director Tommy Jordan & Susan Staley will open with a few songs and host the evening with announcements and volunteer sign ups for the festival! The Hoyt House will be fixing a special menu for the evening!

**The Darnell Boys**

Trio of brothers, singing old time inspired music with imaginative percussion, guitar and bass.

**Us Lately**

The self described “chamber rock” group , a new music project that includes Joy Redmond, Ed Dowling (Incatapec) and Diana Torell ( Jolly Beggars & Squalls). Susan Staley will open and host the evening.

The AFMDS Hoot presently happens on the second Monday of each month, most of the time at the Melting Point in Athens, Ga.

It’s a variety show, and admission is always free. We’ve had many local and some national acts appearing on the stage. The hoot has been a regular occurrence in Athens since the 1980s.
